Sylvester Stallone has spent much of his career creating men who refuse to accept that their time is over.
Rocky Balboa kept getting back up.
John Rambo kept surviving.
And Barney Ross built a team around the idea that when the mission became too dangerous for everyone else, the Expendables were the people you called.
But every action hero eventually encounters an enemy that cannot be punched, shot or outrun.
Time.
That tension has quietly become one of the most interesting parts of The Expendables franchise.
When Stallone launched the first film in 2010, the concept was both an action movie and a celebration of an earlier Hollywood era.
He co-wrote, directed and starred in The Expendables, assembling a cast that included Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Steve Austin, with appearances from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Stallone’s own official site describes the film as a tribute to the blockbuster action cinema of the 1980s and early 1990s.
Barney Ross was at the center of it.
He was not presented as an invincible superhero.
He was older.
Experienced.
Tired in ways younger action characters usually were not.
But when the shooting started, Ross still knew exactly what to do.
That was the fantasy.
The men audiences grew up watching had aged, but they had not become irrelevant.
The first film became a commercial success, and the franchise expanded into sequels filled with some of action cinema’s most recognizable names.
Jason Statham gradually became increasingly important to the series.
As Lee Christmas, he was younger than many of the franchise’s veteran stars but already carried the physical credibility and screen presence necessary to stand beside Stallone.
The relationship between Ross and Christmas eventually became more than a partnership.
It became a transition.
By the time Expend4bles arrived in 2023, Stallone’s role had been significantly reduced while Statham moved closer to the center of the story.
Director Scott Waugh later described that shift as Stallone effectively passing the franchise toward Statham. He also made clear that he did not view Stallone as completely separate from the brand, calling him the person who started The Expendables and its original director.
That transition made sense creatively.
It also exposed the franchise’s biggest problem.
The Expendables were created as aging warriors who still had something left to prove.
But eventually, aging stops being part of the joke.
It becomes the story.
Expend4bles struggled commercially. Box-office trackers reported a weak domestic performance, with the film earning about $16.7 million in North America. Estimates for its worldwide total vary by source, but both Box Office Mojo and The Numbers show that the fourth film performed far below the earlier entries. The Numbers lists a production budget of roughly $100 million and worldwide theatrical revenue of about $51 million.
That matters because a sequel cannot survive on nostalgia alone.
The first Expendables worked partly because its existence felt like an event.
Stallone was not simply starring in another action movie.
He was assembling generations of action cinema inside one film.
The novelty was part of the attraction.
More than 15 years later, that novelty is harder to reproduce.
The actors are older.
The audience has changed.
And action filmmaking has changed with it.
That is why the idea of another Stallone-led installment is more interesting as a character question than a marketing one.
What would Barney Ross still be fighting for?
Another terrorist?
Another arms dealer?
Another global conspiracy?
Those are familiar threats.
The stronger story would be about a leader realizing that experience does not mean he must remain in command forever.
That possibility was already present in Expend4bles.
Statham’s Lee Christmas represented the future.
Ross represented the origin.
And Stallone himself increasingly occupied a position he had encountered before with Rocky Balboa.
The creator becomes the mentor.
The hero becomes the older man standing beside the next generation.
Stallone has already shown that such a transition can work.
In Creed, Rocky was no longer required to be the young fighter in the center of every conflict. He became valuable precisely because he had survived long enough to understand things the younger characters did not.
Barney Ross could potentially occupy similar territory.
But that remains hypothetical.
As of September 2026, no official The Expendables 6 starring Stallone and Statham has been announced. Recent reporting instead points to renewed development of The Expendabelles, a long-discussed female-led spin-off.
That means headlines promising Stallone’s return in a sixth film should be treated carefully.
Still, the franchise Stallone built remains part of his legacy.
It brought together generations of action stars.
It placed Jason Statham beside him as both partner and possible successor.
And it gave Stallone yet another character defined by the same question that has followed him since Rocky:
How much fight does one man have left?
For Barney Ross, the most interesting answer may no longer be “one more mission.”
It may be knowing when the mission belongs to someone else.
